| London is one of the world's
greatest cultural and artistic cities. It is crammed with more
than 300 museums and galleries, including some of the best in
the world. London's galleries hold fine paintings from the last
five centuries - and the wackiest modern art. Its museums boast
treasures from the greatest civilisations of the world - and
tiny homely details of life in times past. |

London is also full of historic
houses, palaces and churches. Buckingham Palace opens its
State Apartments in the summer and if you miss it, see some
of the Queen's Gallery instead. Henry VIII's magnificent palace,
Hampton Court (opposite) with its wonderful gardens, and maze
and Westminster Abbey are all 'must-sees.' Try to find time
to visit Windor Castle, built for William the Conqueror to
guard the western approach to London. The site was chosen
with great care: high above the River Thames, on the edge
of a Saxon hunting ground and only a days march from the Tower
of London. |
